FAQ

FAQ: FAQ

Are you open during the pandemic?

Yes, we are! We haven't missed a meal in 40 years and don't plan on it, especially as our community needs us now more than ever. We've spent the past 3 years handing out to-go bags of food outside (rain or shine!) but are excited to announce that we've officially made the move back inside and are now once again serving hot lunch to all of our guests inside First Presbyterian!

But what kinds of precautions? Is it safe to volunteer?

We take everyone's health very seriously, especially since a lot of our guests are particularly vulnerable to COVID. We have implemented the below safety precautions:
- we are mask-friendly
- we hand out masks and hand sanitizer to guests, as available
- all equipment is sanitized after service every Saturday

When do you serve lunch?

We serve lunch at 1:30pm every Saturday

Where are you located?

We are located at The First Presbyterian Church at 12 W. 12th St. We use the 5th Avenue entrance, between 11th and 12th Sts. The closest subway is Union Square (4/5/6, L, N/Q/R/W). Access directions here

When should I show up to volunteer?

Our volunteers work in two shifts every Saturday. Prep begins at 10:30am and ends around 1pm; serving begins at 1pm and ends around 3:30pm. For more information please check out our Volunteer page

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty. Purses, bags, and other valuables are discouraged, but they can be stored in our space during your shift

Do I need kitchen experience to volunteer?

Nope! Just bring yourself, an energetic attitude, and we’ll show you the rest

Can I just show up?

Please contact us at sjskvolunteer@gmail.com to schedule a Saturday before you or your group visit. We have a small space, and with lots of volunteers we may not be able to fit everyone or ensure that everyone finds a job in our kitchen

Do you serve special meals on holidays?

We try to serve a special meal for a number of holidays throughout the year. Our holiday meal service is always the Saturday before the holiday, unless the holiday falls on a Saturday

Do you have an age limit on volunteers?

Our volunteers are 13 and up

Can I bring donated items such as clothing, food, or supplies?

We love donations! Please send us a message at sjskvolunteer@gmail.com to let us know what you would like to bring and we’ll let you know when someone will be available to receive your gift
